Description
English: The portrait of Miss Milner-Gibson, daughter of Thomas Milner-Gibson, and granddaughter of Sir John Gery Cullum, 8th Bart., was commissioned by Miss Milner-Gibson's half-brother Thomas Bowles from his friend James Tissot. The artist Tissot, having fled France, lived for a time at Bowles' London home, and was accepting commissions for portraits. This portrait was willed to the Borough of St Edmundsbury by George Gery Milner-Gibson Cullum, last surviving member of the family, who left a large collection of paintings and decorative arts to the Borough.
