Still later, thecorium is infiltrated with cell-growth, which causesatrophy of the papillee, and fissures form in the whitenedpatches. If epithelioma supervenes, a section willprobably show all the above stages ; at the peripheryof the patch, the first stage of thickened epitheliumwill be seen, and as the centre is approached thechanges increase gradually, and at the centre itself,which is the oldest part of the patch, the rete cells arefound proliferating and forcing themselves in columnsinto the submucous layer, the columns being sur-rounded by a small cell-infiltration. Kaposi comparesthe development of epithelioma in such cases to thatwhich sometimes occurs in connection with simplewarts. The treatment in these cases consists in absten-tion from tobacco, spirituous liquors, and highly-spicedfood, thorough mouth
