not dependent upona specific virus, and that it gives rise to changes of apurely local character. Its poison is capable of beinggenerated de novo, and is then communicable fromperson to person. Inoculated under the epidermis orepithelium it causes irritation and the development ofa pustule, which is succeeded by an ulcer. The irrita-tion frequently spreads to the neighbouring glands,and induces inflammation and suppuration. Thesecretion of the ulcer itself and the pus from thesuppurating glands form the vehicles for the poison ;and generally the presence of the staphylococci orstreptococci usually found in ordinary j)tis may bedemonstrated. On the other hand, very manyobservers maintain that the chancroid is due to aspecific virus, and though at some future time theexistence of a specific micro-organism may be satisfac-torily proved, up to the present this has not beendone. In menit is most often found on the glans and prepuce; inwomen, on the internal surface of the labia raajora andminora. In both sexes it is often multiple. Its secretionis readily auto-inoculable. The soft chancre appearsYery soon after exposure to contagion, in the form^ofa small reddish patch ; this becomes swollen, and givesplace to a pustule which soon breaks and is succeededby an ulcer. The pustular stage may be wanting; anexcoriation or crack may be the first appearance.
