eat swelling of the prepuce and phimosis or para-phimosis are especially apt to be associated withchancres in this situation, and sometimes both corporacavernosa become involved in the swelling. Chancresare less common on the integument of the penis andscrotum. When they occur near the root of the penisthey often assume a large size, and are apt to spreaddeeply in the tissues covering the pubes. On thefemale genital organs, soft chancres are generallyfound at the entrance to the vagina, on the innersurface of the labia majora, near the posterior com-missure and the fossa navicularis. Multiple chancresare, of course, very common as a result of auto-inoculation. On the mucous membrane of the vaginaand on the portio vaginalis uteri, soft chancres areless common. The soft chancrebeing readily auto-inoculable, an ulcer is liable toform on any part with which the secretion from thesore comes into contact. The slightest abrasion orexcoriation is sufficient to enable the virus to gainaccess to the tissues. Thus, chancres are often seenon the mens Yeneris and in the neighbourhood ofthe anus, on the pubes and lower part of the ab-domen, and on the inside of the thighs. They arealso found on the nipple, the lips, the tongue, thecheeks, and the j&ngers. They have also been foundon the scalp, but chancres on this part are usually ofthe indurated kind. A soft chancre left to itself, usually continues forfrom two to four weeks, without showing any ten-dency to heal. At first, indeed, it often tends tospread and burrow, and to invade neighbouringtissues.
