y come the forearm and thigh.The neighbourhood of the joints is particularly liableto be attacked; but in these parts the ulceration isgenerally of a superficial character, being due tocutaneous gummata. The disintegration of subcu-taneous gummata, which are most common in themiddle third of the leg, gives rise to much moreserious ulceration, often of a very chronic character,and complicated by new gummatous formations,erysipelas, periostitis, etc. In severe cases, largeportions of the surface of the leg may be coveredwith nodules or tubercles in various stages, somerecent, others ulcerating or in process of cicatrisa-tion, while the skin between them is thickenedand inflamed. The bone becomes enlarged, eitheruniformly or as a result of distinct out-growths;and a condition resembling elephantiasis may becomedeveloped in course of time. EXPLANATION OF PLATE XIII. Fig. 1. Haniia-rt )iLh. AFFECTIONS OF THE SKIN. 149 Gummatous ulcers of the arm and forearm areless common, but they are sometimes seen in theneighbourhood of the elbow-joint and on the back ofthe hand. The ulceration is, for the most part,superficial, and the cicatrices do not interfere withmovements of the joints. Subcutaneous gummata onthe forearm may, however, give rise to deep-seatedulceration. The face and scalp are often the seat of syphiliticulceration, consequent upon pustular eruptions orthe disintegration of cutaneous and subcutaneousgummata. Ulcers may occur on any part of the face,but the nose, forehead, and region of the mouth aremost commonly attacked. IN^odules or tubercles of abrownish-red colour, and grouped together in variousways, appear on the sides of the nose and adjoiningportions of the face.
