between syphilis andcancer, and it cannot be admitted that, in a generalway, the former is a predisposing cause of the latter.The elements of epithelioma are, however, derivedfrom the epithelium of the skin and mucous mem-branes, and some external source of irritation oftenappears to be the exciting cause of the disease. Insyphilitic leucokeratosis of the tongue, epithelialproliferation is already present, and the affected partis constantly exposed to irritation.
