Français : Taverne Royale, vers 1930

« En 1920, mon grand-père maternel, Eugène Pouliot, achète l’hôtel Royal situé au 30-32, rue Dorchester, coin Sainte-Hélène, dans Saint-Roch. Quatre ans plus tard, le restaurant de l’hôtel devient la Taverne Royale. Celle-ci est fréquentée par les ouvriers des tanneries et des manufactures de chaussures établies à proximité. À cette époque, un verre de bière coûte 5 «cennes», une petite bouteille, 15 et une grosse, 25. Quand grand-père jugeait les buveurs trop éméchés pour continuer à lever le coude, il leur offrait un repas gratuit. Sur la photo, il se tient près de la porte, devant l’annonce Molson et à côté de celle de Boswell, et il regarde passer son traîneau à chiens lors d’une course qu’il commanditait. Démolie en 1950 pour parfaire l’élargissement de la rue Dorchester, la taverne sera reconstruite sur le même coin de rue. En novembre 1954, ses fils Lucien et Charles-Eugène assurent la relève. Le 9 juin 1998, un incendie majeur détruit le bâtiment de trois étages. De nos jours, l’INRS occupe l’emplacement. » - Raymond Pelletier, Société historique de Québec
