Segesta, Sicily, 1998 The small, square holes cut into the stones of the stylobate (foundation course of the columns) probably received metal cramps in order to hold the stones together. If so, then the two blocks, which have been restored facing the viewer, should have been restored facing each other -- but then of course we would not see the holes, and the lesson would be lost. |
