Description
English:
  • Photograph of the tender on the William Crooks locomotive.
  • Overview: The tender carried the water and wood required to operate the “Crooks.” Lettering on the tender proudly proclaims the “Crooks” as property of the 1st Division of the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad. Railroads were – and continue to be – broken up into smaller divisions to ease operations and track maintenance. The St. Paul and Pacific ultimately became a part of James J. Hill’s Great Northern Railway. Hill himself is said to have saved the “Crooks” from the scrapper’s torch around 1900.
