Description
English: A collage of photographs highlighting various outdoor sporting events held during the previous year appeared in the January 1919 issue of the Norwester magazine. The collage included this view of men playing tennis. On Labor Day 1918 in Miller Park, Upper Arlington held its first tennis handicap, which was organized by a committee of three men: Jack Hollar, Paul Spence, and Evan J. “Jay” Crane. They assigned categories and drew lots to determine the players for each match. The start of the tournament was delayed for two days due to inclement weather, but very few players dropped out. The tournament was reportedly hard-fought to the very end. Jack Holllar was the winner, and the runner-up was a remarkable fourteen-year-old player named Frank Fenton. Jack Hollar’s name was engraved on a silver trophy cup provided by the Upper Arlington Company. The rules stipulated that if, in future, any player succeeded in winning three tournaments he was entitled to keep the trophy.
