Family: Combretaceae Local name(Telugu) Tella Maddi Distribution: Found along streams in forests, also planted as an avenue tree, It is now rarely found in natural conditions.Limited to India and Srilanka. 10-20 mts tall large deciduous trees, bark greenish white, excorticating into large thin flakes, Leaves elliptic, oblong, base sub cordate, coriaceous; Flowers 3-4 mm across, creamy yellow in 10 cm long axillary panicled spikes; Calyx tube cylindric, with 5 valvate lobes, Petals 0, stamens 10 in 2 series, exerted, disk inside the stamens, 5 lobed,ovary 1 celled, ovules 2-3 pendulous, Fruit with 5 equal wings or angles. The wood is hard and valuable, hence the plant is not seen commonly in the forest. |
