as so struck with the beauty, sym-metry, and original design of the Church of theAssumption of the Holy Virgin on the Maro-seika Street that he placed a guard near and hadsentries posted all round it, to protect it from beinglooted or injured in any way. The church wasbuilt either m the reign of Ivan the Terrible orof Boris Godunoff, but the absolute date is notknown. Another church connected with Napoleon andthe French invasion is the beautiful cathedral ofOur Saviour on the banks of the river a little abovethe Kremlin. This magnificent structure was builtby the Russian Emperors out of their private purse,as a thanksgiving offering to God for the freedomof the nation from the French invasion. Thecathedral is a fine example of the so-called Russo-Byzantine style of architecture. The original ideawas to build the cathedral on the Sparrow Hills,the highest ground in or near Moscow, and tothe south-west of the town on the bank of theMoskva. According to the plan of the architect Witberg,

KREMLIN WALLS, CHURCHES, ETC. 219 the cathedral was to have been a three-storiedbuilding, 770 feet in height. Tiie foundation-stone was laid in October, 1817, with great cere-mony. However, after working for over eightyears, and expending more than 4,000,000 roubles,the architects came to the final conclusion that thesoil on the Sparrow Hills was too uncertain tosustain the weight of the great building, andanother site had to be selected.
