English: Tesco, Lerwick. Originally built by Presto in 1996, on the site of the old Shetland Marts. They were moving from a central location in Commercial Street (now owned by Boots - see 1018695) and the building was controversial at the time, as the first 'out of town' supermarket in Lerwick (the other supermarket, Co-op is on the edge of town, but still near other shops, see 1132260). Presto was eventually bought up by Safeway, and the shop traded under this name until Safeway itself was taken over by Morrisons in 2006. Morrisons immediately sold off many of the smaller Safeway stores to Somerfield. In March 2008, the Lerwick branch of Somerfield was bought by UK Supermarket giant Tesco, who closed the shop for a four-month refurbishment. As usual, Tesco have courted controversy over the building extension and various licenses; the customers seem unperturbed, however.
