Tetrathemis platyptera Selys, 1878

Photographer
Description
English: Tetrathemis platyptera, Pygmy Skimmer, is a small dragonfly having yellow/orange colouration to the base of the wings. The adult male has distinct yellow and black markings and its vivid turquoise eyes. The yellow base of the hind wings can clearly be seen, which distinguishes the species. The female is very much like the male, but the markings are a little different and the abdomen is much more robust.

Unlike other dragonflies, the Tertrathemis platyptera lays eggs on the twigs or leaves of plants hanging on to the water bodies, a special strategy for their larval development, and hatched nymphs were dropped into water for their further development. Females of most of the members in the family Libellulidae oviposit by washing their eggs off in flight, by tapping the water surface or on floating vegetation (Corbet, 1962). However, in genus Tetrathemis, it has been observed that the females lay eggs on the objects, which overhang on water, and from there newly hatched larvae drop in to their future habitat (Fraser, 1933).

There are different opinions among scientists regarding the epiphytic oviposition above the water surface by female dragonflies (1) it is an adaptive mechanism to avoid the anoxic conditions of stagnant water bodies (Mccrae & Corbet, 1982), and (2) it is to reduce the predatory pressure from other carnivorous organisms present in pond, such as fishes. (Miller & Miller, 1985; Lempert, 1988).
