Summary edit

Description
English: Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 195 Sumner Place, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. The building seen here was originally home to Sumner Place Methodist Episcopal Church, a congregation founded in 1888 as a mission of the (then only five-year-old) Lovejoy Methodist Episcopal Church with the goal of attracting membership from among the residents of the newly developing Schiller Park area of Buffalo's far East Side. The building seen here, the second to house the flock, was erected in 1898 to a design by the firm of Carson & Byrens that has been subjected to some tasteless alterations over the years - vinyl siding in a faux-stone pattern covers the wood-framed exterior, for instance - yet other interesting details, such as the enormous Palladian stained-glass windows and the odd pitch of the corner tower, remain. Sumner Place Methodist disbanded in 1995 after many years of decrease in the membership of the church due to changing neighborhood demographics; the building lay vacant for a brief time after that but was soon purchased by Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, who continue meeting there currently.
