English: The location of the "Finchley Gap" in North London, through which it was once thought (erroneously, but not without reason) that the River Thames flowed.
The text in the image is the knub of the mistake; the river Great Ouse drained the plain of the Upper Thames (above the Goring Gap) and the traces of sandy "chert" are from a combination of wind-blown deposits and sand left behind in the last extreme high water period of the Earth, when locally the land was a little lower (most of south-east England). |
