Fifty The 19 17 R ept o nian Junior Design R. B. Harris This plan by Mr. Harris is for the same property as that described onthe preceding page. The house faces west and is approached by a formaldrive which enters at the extreme northeast corner of the property andfollows the boundary line to the entrance court. The service drive comesfrom the road on the west, an excellent arrangement. In the gardens, particular stress has been laid on the parterres whichare very elaborate and Italian in character. The hill top is reached by aseries of ramps, steps, and terraces, and is featured by a very decorativefountain. A cut-flower and vegetable garden, and a recreational area areincluded in the scheme. Rike A SMALL CITY PLACE The first work in landscape design done by the students in the pro-fessional course comes in the sophomore year when the study of the smallcity place is considered. The problems shown on the opposite page areexamples of this class of work. This property is larger than the average,but it may be taken as a typical city place, with the highly developed areasfor garden and recreational purposes, and the relatively small lawns. A city block with streets on all sides comprises the property shown onthe plans. The problem was to locate the house, to provide a suitableentrance and service drive, gardens, and an altogether attractive landscapedevelopment. As the property might be entered from any one of thestreets, there is a variation in the handling of the entrance drives. Inboth drawings, gardens, service, and recreation areas are shown.
