Summary edit

Description
English: The Abbey at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England is the second largest parish church in the country. A former Benedictine monastery it is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. In 1539 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction by claiming it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, and successfully bought the building from King Henry VIII for the salvage value of the bells and the lead on the roof. The price, £453, around £200,000 in 2012 values.
