Summary edit
DescriptionThe Altar.jpg |
English: The altar is made of limestone. Along the top is a design of wheat and grapes, symbols of the Eucharist, set in a band of red and gold.
On the face of the altar there are three panels representing Christ’s sacrifice on the cross: the pelican (who feeds her young with her own blood), the Chalice with the Host, and the Lamb of God. A crown surmounts each symbol. The reredos, which depicts the Last Supper, is of English oak and limestone. It was designed by Chester Price and carved in the studio of Leo Lentelli in 1937. The floor, steps and pavement in the sanctuary are made of half-glazed Moravian tiles and Vermont green slate. They were executed at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The factory is now a national historic landmark and a tribute to Henry Chapman Mercer, the founder, who was a leader in the American Arts and Crafts movement. Other examples of his tile work may be seen at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and at the Rockefeller Estate, “Kykuit,” in Pocantico Hills, New York. |
