But if it is wellnigh impossible for anartist to see and paint troops at gripswith the enemy it is possible to portrayall the activities of army life in the frontareas right up to the moment the infantrywaves launch their attack, and this theofficial artists of the A. E. F. have done.They have shown troops on the march, inbillets, in trench and fox hole, at rest andplay, and as much as possible, in actualcombat. These artists have done for the Ameri-can army and the late war what never hasbeen done before. They have depictedwar as it really is, as the soldier knowsit who has been through it and whilethe public may never fully appreciatethese war pictures, the American warartists of the A. E. F. will have the satis-faction of knowing that they have handedon to succeeding generations a faithfulreproduction of Armageddon. Membersof the American Legion will value thewar paintings at their true worth.
