y the carver at the back of this seat—one on the right handside to hold a green vase from which a flame seems to beissuing, while the other is a rest for a white bird—possiblya cockatoo. To make an effective picture of a figure of this sort, itdemands to be photographed directly from in front, as it isfrom this point alone that this ancient and attractive piececan be appreciated. On direct lateral view there are but twopoints best seen, and these are the profile of the person, andthe fact that the elaborate top of her seat or throne archesfar over her head, its outermost point being in about the sameplane with one an inch in advance of her left knee. The backof this piece is flat and uncarved. A very remarkable piece of pottery of Japanese manufactureis shown in Figure 2, it being a chocolate-pot, and wasprobably made for the export trade.
