ge of coarsenessand brutality, though no mind was ever cleanerthan hers. The novel was really the wail ofa human soul compelled to haunt the Yorkshiremoors. ^Shirley was quieter in tone; but itcaused a stir in the north, for the characterswere easily recognized portraits, among whichwas a superb study of Emily as Shirley Keel-dar of quivering lip, dilating nostrils, and wild, fascinating eyes, when moved to passion orstrange, Titanic visions. *Villette, which isthe * Professor worked over, was founded onCharlottes life in Brussels. Though it sufferssomewhat from its foreign setting, it is perhapsher masterpiece. Lucy Snowe and Paul Eman-uel are her most elaborate characters, and no-where else has Charlotte Bronte so subtly an-alyzed states of mind verging into madness. Bibliography.—*The Life of Charlotte Bronteby Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell (London 1857, after-wards revised and frequently reissued) isamong the finest biographies in the Englishlanguage. It should be supplemented, however.
