Gladiatorswere first exhibited at Rome in 264 B.C., byMarcus and Decimus Brutus at the funeral oftheir father; and the custom probably originatedin Etruria, where a slave was killed at his mas-ters pyre. Gladiators also fought at public fes-tivals and other entertainments. They were atfirst prisoners, slaves, or condemned criminals;but afterward freemen fought in the arena,either for hire or from choice. Under theempire persons of senatorial rank, and evenwomen, fought in the arena. The regulargladiators were instructed in schools (ludi)established for this purpose.
