On 14 May he wascommissioned major-general in the regular armyand assigned to the Department of the Ohio,embracing that State, Indiana, Illinois, and,later, West Virginia. In May the Confederategovernment had despatched a small force toGrafton, W. Va., under Col. Porterfield, with thepurpose of breaking the Baltimore & Ohio RR.On 26 May Gen.
