The metallic wealthof the empire is considerable and comprisesgold, silver, copper, tin, lead, and iron. Theisland of Sado is particularly rich in aurifer-ous ore. Both the tin and copper of Japanare of superior quality. Coal is found in sev-eral districts, and the output is gradually in-creasing, in 1902 amounting to over 9,700,000tons. Petroleum is becoming a product ofsome consequence. Sulphur abounds; thermaland mineral springs are of frequent occurrence;and ambergris is met with on some of theshores. Among the precious stones are agates,carnelians, and jaspers, while pearls are foundin the shell fisheries around the islands. Climate.— The climate of Japan, though ex-tremely various — being intensely cold in thenorth and warm in the south — is, on _ thewhole, much milder than its latitude would indi-cate; owing, chiefly, to the influence of thesurrounding ocean.
