English: The Bluecoat School above the Shropshire Union Canal The Bluecoat School towers above the Shropshire Union Canal, which flows through its deep sandstone cutting. The narrow bridge is the Bridge of Sighs, which was built in 1793, and it enabled condemned prisoners to walk between the Northgate gaol and the chapel of Little St John to receive the last rites. Both these buildings have now disappeared. The larger bridge carries Northgate Street over the canal |
