ts disappear by night and the unlighted corners and darkrecesses take on a grotesque appearance almost fascinating.But even in the most brilliantly lighted places the light is soinferior to that of daylight that it is not an easy matter to takea photograph. Even now night photography is not an uncommon thing.But the photographs that are taken at night, as a general rule,are of brilliantly lighted buildings or streets and the principaldetail consists of the attractive array of lights, with here and 145 there a glint from a protruding cornice. Such photographs areusually taken by long exposure and are void of the movingobjects that give them life. Ordinary movement has no effectupon the plate unless there be some conveyance with a lightpass before the lens. In such instances it is necessary tocover the lens with the slide from the plate holder or, with anautomatic shutter, to close it until the light has passed. Other-wise the moving light would cause an annoying streak acrossthe plate.

It is not necessary that one be a professional, nor must hebe equipped with the very latest and most perfect appliancespossible to produce. Any ordinary dry plate will produce agood night view—the difference in the speed of the plateregulating the difference in the length of exposure. It istrue some lenses are better adapted for the taking of photo-graphs at night where bright arc lights shine directly into thecamera, and in such cases non-halation plates will also producethe better results. But where it is possible to get objects suchas limbs of trees or telephone poles between the lights and the 146
