English: The Castle, Holy Island Taken from the shore to the west of the castle. Holy Island is largely composed of hard, dark that forms part of the Whin Sill, a large body of igneous rock dolerite formed 295 million years ago. The castle is located on a large outcrop of Whin Sill Dolerite known as Beblowe. It is a is a small fort built during the reign of Henry VIII (1509-47) and it replaced an earlier look-out tower. It was converted into a house in 1902 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. |
