Description

A rare example in architecture of the new nestling in the old.

Although it received damage in both the recent earthquakes, the 17-storey building is still intact. After the September 2010, quake 50 people were evacuated from the tower because a crack was found in the eighth floor. After the February 2011 quake a stairwell collapsed and at least 30 people were trapped for a while. The damage is now being assessed but, even if the it's reopened, at least one of the firms that used the building has declared that they will not be returning there. There is a general feeling that there should be no more tower blocks built in Christchurch.
