Summary edit

Description
English: The Common Ford. The immediate foreground area is the location of the Common Ford, the point at which an ancient drove road (from Bonhill, across Dumbarton Muir, towards Fintry) crossed the Gallangad Burn; for more, see: 1009890.

It is easy to see why this spot was chosen; in contrast to the situation even a short distance downstream (e.g. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1402258 ), here it is possible simply to step over the burn, and the approaches on either side are fairly gentle slopes.

Although the drove road fell into disuse at the end of the nineteenth century, it is still possible to discern the green ribbon of its route as it approaches the ford from the west (this would have been the direction of travel): 1402260.

On crossing to the east side, the drove road would then have deflected slightly to the north-east, since the route immediately ahead is blocked by a wall of rock: 1402261.
