Summary edit

Description
English: The Cwm End incline viewed from the Marl Pit The open workings at Cwm End is known as the Marl Pit because of the 30 foot thick deposit of marl, covered by peat, which had to be stripped away to access the slate vein. The incline runs through the open pit down to Floor D and then continues underground to Floor H. It has a gradient of 1:3.8. At Floor H it is joined by near horizontal 850 yard long tunnel from Cwm Penmachno. That tunnel acted as a drain for the underground workings, saving the company the heavy cost of pumping. All the quarried rock was uphauled along this incline to the Rhiwbach Upper Mill.
