ene instantly excited the gallantry of some of thespectators, who immediately espoused the Davenports side,and one of the prettiest free fights began that ever wasseen. It was one indiscriminate knock-down, all over thehouse; they chassez-e& and balanced, turned corners andreeled, squared to their partners, went down the outsideand up the middle, — oh, it was grand ! Among the peaceably disposed was a sea-captain, ratherold, and weighing about three hundred. He was enjoyingthe delightful time, when a burly fellow marched up, andlet him have it plump, and ding-dong, square between theeyes; and away he sailed, to mingle in the thickest of themelee, and in a minute more was banging away, right andleft, at anybody and everybody. The Davenports, by thistime having cleared the stage, were now standing lookingdown calmly on the seething, surging, boiling multitudebelow. He then turned himround; and, while he held him with a grip as terrible as iron,he slapped the fellows face until his eyes were in as com-plete a suit of tip-top mourning as ever eyes were in thisworld. The fellow wriggled, twisted, squirmed, sputtered,and swore by turns; but he could no more get away fromthat old captain than an oyster can climb an apple-tree. Meanwhile, another equally interesting scene had beengoing on. There was a little, lame, pinched-up man, notmuch bigger than a boy of fourteen, also looking on andenjoying the fun: but his enjoyment was of short duration;for one
