took with us noone but the elder of the two sons of Mr. Davenport. The room had been so remodelled that there is now butone entrance. We entered, examined every inch of theroom, even overturning every thing that could conceal thesmallest child. We then shut the door, locked it, and pock-eted the key. The room was then made dark by closingthe window-shutters, and we took our seats at a small table,on which lay a trumpet, a hand-bell, and some other things.The medium then asked us to take his hands in ours, so thatwe might be certain that he did nothing himself which wemight hear or feel. This we did; and in a minute thereafterwe heard the trumpet move off the table. It lay on the righthand of us, the medium being on our left, so that he couldnot have reached it if he had been provided with a thirdhand.
