Summary edit

Description
English: The De Dunstanville Memorial on the Summit of Carn Brea This 90 foot high granite monument was built in 1836 in honour of Francis Lord De Dunstanville and Basset. It is West Cornwall's most distinctive and recognisable monument and can be seen from many miles around. Francis came to prominence in 1785 when he deputised 50 special constables to arrest leaders of the local food riots. The riots were caused by hunger brought on by extremely low wages at the mines. Miners were paid in tokens which could only be spent at the mine owners store and were worth whatever the mine owner decided. Some of those arrested were hung, others transported. For his part in it Francis was awarded the title 'Lord De Dunstaville'.
