English: The Dorking Stove and Fireplace Emporium. The largest commercial premises of this stretch of the A24 (now often superseded for longer distances by the directly competing M23) at Holmwood the sign over the door says "The Holly & Laurel Emporium". Suppliers of "new and reclaimed Stoves, Fireplaces, Gas Fires, Accessories and Flue Pipes" "together with a wide range of landscape furniture and other items of Architectural Salvage". See their website http://www.dorkingstoves.com for more information. Previously the Laurel and Holly Hotel.
A likely candidate for the Sawyers Arms, marked on the 1873 map. The stop would have been busy for almost a century until motor popularity in the 1930s to 50s with at least hundreds of stopping horses here per day going to and from West or South-West London and Brighton and/or direct towns between the two, mainly Epsom, Leatherhead, Dorking and Horsham. The legacies of this fairly major artery are many and a relatively quiet and useful route today. |
