Description
English: The Duke of Argyll's Monument, Stainborough Park. A massive Corinthian column in the parkland of the estate. A statue of Minerva is on top of the capital. Inscription: On the front face of the pedestal: TO THE MEMORY / OF HIS GRACE / JOHN DUKE OF ARGYLL / AND GREENWICH / Who died October ye. 4th 1743 / This Column was Dedicated in / 1744. The column was located to one side of the original drive up to Wentworth Castle less than 1 kilometre away. This information has been taken from the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association, whose website is a mine of information.
