as the name glfen to adistrict in the south-west of Asia Minor, occupying theportion of the coast between Oaria and Paniphylia, ande.xtending inland as far as the ridge of Mount Taurus. Theregion thus designated is one strongly marked by nature,as constituting a kind of peninsula or promontory projectingtowards the south from the great mountain masses of theinterior. It was also inhabited from a very early periodby a distinct people, known to the Greeks as Lycians, butwhose native name, according to Herodotus, was Termih-B,or (as it is written by HecatJeus) TreraUa?, and this is con-firmed by native inscriptions, in which the name is writtenTramih-c. Herodotus tells us also that they were not theoriginal inhabitants of the country, which was previouslyoccupied by the Milyans, and this is rendered probable bythe fact that a people of that name was still found in thorugfjed mountainous district in the north-cant, who appearto have ahv;iys continued distinct from the Lycians.
