Summary edit

Description Built during the Hellenistic period, The Great Theatre of Ephesus was expanded during the subsequent Roman period, eventually growing to a capacity of 24,000 spectators, being among the largest theaters in antiquity, demonstrating the large population and economic might of Ephesus. The theater was used by the city until the 700s AD, when the city, which was in decline due to the silting of the ancient port, utilized part of the theater as a defensive wall that protected it from invasions. The theater was abandoned as the population shifted to the site of the modern-day town of Selcuk in the Byzantine period. The theater was excavated during the 19th Century, and has been partially restored, allowing visitors to envision the large size of the city and its importance during antiquity. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
