Prior to 1884, we were behind many cities of Europe, and.in fact, of our own country, in the number of acres devoted topark purposes. There was Central Park, containing 900 acres,which was, and still is, the most beautiful and well-kept parkin the world, and we had a number of others, but all small.Since 1884, there has been a most decided advance in thismatter and to-day we possess not far from 7000 acres set apartforever as public pleasure grounds of our citizens. Theseparks are well distributed and meet the requirements of all. Besides our parks, our people have the advantage of ourmagnificent river fronts on both the North aud East Rivei b.

Our public charities are most ample and liberal in theirscope, and while we cannot assert that they are perfect, we doclaim that they compare favorably with those of any city inthe world.
