English: Journal entry marked January, 1919 telling the legend of Jose Gaspar or Gasparilla and his connection to Tampa, Florida
"In 1821 the ship of the infamous pirate, Jose Gaspar, was attacked by a US navy schooner. As his ship sank, he and his first mate loaded up a fortune in gold onto a rowboat. However, as they began to disembark, the first mate betrayed Gaspar, wrapping the anchor's chain around his wrist and pushing it overboard. As Gaspar fell, the force of the chain ripped his hand off, landing it amongst the treasure in the rowboat, while his body followed the anchor to the bottom of the gulf. As the first mate made his way up the gulf coast and into Tampa Bay, a great storm came over him, but this was no ordinary storm. From the bottom of the ocean, Gaspar's restless spirit sought vengeance for his betrayal and reunion with his lost hand. With mighty waves crashing against the rowboat, the first mate barely escaped the storm, burying the treasure and the hand on the shore and leaving Gaspar's spirit to search the depths of Tampa Bay for all of time. It is customary to toss coins into Tampa Bay during a storm in an attempt to appease Gaspar's restless spirit, as articles of pirate law dictate that any man to lose a limb in an engagement should be properly compensated." |
