The Harvard Houseboat, Kiating Fu, China [1908] EH Wilson [RESTORED] I retouched out spots and a few minor scratches, adjusted contrast, tone, and added a final sepia. I found this image in Harvard's Collection using its VIA (Visual Information Access) Engine. According to the information page for this image, the following info was found on the mount: "China. "The Harvard" houseboat. Kiating Fu, near W. Szechuan. The house-boat with Boy and boat captain on roof. Handy man on gang plank. Altitude 1100 ft." with a location given alternatively as: Leshan, Leshan City, Sichuan Sheng, China Given the former (obsolete) Wade-Giles method of translation and the modern spelling, it is sometimes impossible to track down exactly where a particular site is in the present day. Harvard was kind enough to take the guesswork out of it. Wilson, an explorer and botanist, probably hired the boat to take him up and down the rivers as the most efficient means of travel. He likely retained one particular vessel for a long duration, enough for him to affectionately give it a nickname. The dog seen looking out from the middle of the boat was probably Wilson's or owned by someone in his entourage. It is doubtful that such an animal would have survived as a pet in those days. |
