Description
English: The Heathcote Mausoleum Southwest of All Saints' church and within the churchyard. According to a history of the church by S. C. Rawdon, the mausoleum was built in 1771 by Thomas Heathcote as he felt the vault in the church was not big enough to accommodate his family. There are 38 spaces within. The Heathcote family was associated with Hursley since 1718, see http://www.hursley.hampshire.org.uk/history_of_hursley.htm#Heathcote . The plaque on the left side of the mausoleum records that Samuel Heathcote was buried outside in 1797 on his own instructions because, according to Rawdon, he did not want "to be pushed into one of those pigeon holes of that horrid place". The plaque records that "he was a man whose unaffected humility, artless manners, strict integrity and truly Christian benevolence demanded and obtained the esteem of all who knew him". I guess we shall have to take his word for it.
