e first of the armed Americanmerchantmen to fall victim to theU-boat was the Aztec, which wastorpedoed off the coast of France nearBrest at nine oclock on the evening ofApril 1. She was carrying foodstuffsand other supplies valued at more thanhalf a million dollars. She was armedwith two five-inch guns; one forwardand one aft, manned by a gun crewof twelve American bluejackets fromthe naval yacht Dolphin in chargeof Lieutenant Gresham. In the shipscrew of 39 there were 17 Americans, sAll of the gun crew are reported saved. Two more Belgian relief steamshipsloaded with food from America havebeen sunk. The first, the Trevier,was torpedoed without warning andtwenty-seven of the crew wounded,some of them by gunfire while gettinginto the boats. The other, the Fel-stein, was sunk by a mine while ap-proaching Rotterdam. The British transport Canadian,carrying 1200 horses from Boston toLiverpool, was sunk without warningoff the Skeiligs. There were 56 Ameri-cans on board but all were saved. )
