(y> EM THE INDIAN EMPIRE ILLUSTRATED. 105 Seen from a distance, the broad white towers of Singham Mahal stand out against thehorizon like some pale spectral monitor, to proclaim the transitory grandenr of man,and the ephemeral duration of kingdoms, as represented by the oblivion to which theirfounder has been consigned, and by the ruius of his capital that lie scattered before it. HINDOO TEMPLE AND PALACE—MADURA. The singularly interesting remains represented in the accompanying engraving occur inthe immediate neighbourhood of the ancient city of Maduia, situated almost at thesouthern extremity of the Indian peninsula, and about 270 miles S.W. of Madras.The city is enclosed by old bastioned stone walls, and was formerly , the capital of aprovince. Its principal streets are wide and regular, and the puljlic buildings, for themost part, are magnificent; but its private dwelUngs are unusually mean and insignifi-cant.
