HINDOO TEMPLE AND PALACE—MADURA. The singularly interesting remains represented in the accompanying engraving occur inthe immediate neighbourhood of the ancient city of Maduia, situated almost at thesouthern extremity of the Indian peninsula, and about 270 miles S.W. of Madras.The city is enclosed by old bastioned stone walls, and was formerly , the capital of aprovince. Its principal streets are wide and regular, and the puljlic buildings, for themost part, are magnificent; but its private dwelUngs are unusually mean and insignifi-cant.
