nto hysterics. Some of these men had sat in theYoung Mens Convention of 1828 fav-orable to John Quincy Adams, of whichyoung Seward was president. Somehad sustained him in the anti-Masonicracket and elected him to the StateSenate in 1830. Many had supportedhim, but unsuccessfullv. as Whig can-didate for G-overnor of New York in1834, being then but 32 years of age.Four years later they elected him on thesame ticket. They found in him afamous Governor. One who sustainedinternal improvements and made anissue on the slave oligarchy by refusingthe request of the Governor of Virginiato return three negro seamen chargedwith aiding slaves to escape. They re-elected him Governor andwould have done so again but for hisrefusal to run in 1842. They were with him in enthusiasticsupport of Clay. They elevated him to the Senate ofthe United States in 1849 and re-elected him in 1855. He was one ofthe founders of the Republican party.
