Description
English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 September 2021, shows the Mar Menor in Spain. The Mar Menor is the largest saltwater wetland in Europe. Although the area is a Ramsar site (designated as being of “international importance” by the 1971 Convention on Wetlands), and protected by several EU directives, its waters are heavily polluted due to unsustainable agricultural practices in the surrounding lowlands. Recently, the Spanish government announced the funding of several projects to enable the environmental regeneration of the area, with the aim of conserving biodiversity in and around the lagoon, including the creation of a 1.5 kilometre buffer zone along the shores of the Mar Menor. Copernicus, with its open-source data, allows for wide-ranging monitoring of the water quality of wetlands around the world.
