English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 25 April 2022, shows the Mar Menor, in Spain. It is a large lagoon on the southeast coast of the country, separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a strip of land 22 kilometres long. According to a report published by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) for the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, its waters are at risk of oxygen depletion, which could threaten its marine ecosystems. The scientists point out that, in recent decades, the lagoon’s environment has been suffering from a massive influx of nutrients from human activity, as a consequence of intensive agriculture and mass tourism in the area. Secondly, the report warns that the heavy rainfall that has affected the area in March has caused a drop in salinity of the Mar Menor’s waters, a crucial variable for its environment. The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) provides free and open data and services that enable the monitoring of marine ecosystems and support policy implementation. |
