| Description |
A plaque on the square in front of the National Museum of Lithuania in old town Vilnius stating: The National Museum in the New Arsenal is one of the oldest and largest museums in Lithuania, containing rich material about the history of the state and the national culture. The building itself is interesting as well, as it combines different epochs and styles. The slightly curved main facade is 130 m long, and follows the line of the 14th century city wall on which it stands. In the 18th century some storage premises here were adapted as an arsenal. The last important reconstruction was completed in 1965. In the square in front of the museum is a monument to King Mindaugas, the founder of the Lithuanian state, erected in 2003 (sculptor R. Midvikis). |
