Appleton, 214 miles north of Chicago. TheLower Fox River Valley embraces a section of 64 The North and West Illustrated. country situated between Lake Winnebago andGreen Bay. From northeast to southwest itextends a distance of 50 miles, and from northwestto southeast about 40 miles. The valley is inter-sected by the 44th parallel of latitude, and its cli-mate, therefore, is similar to that which obtains inSouthern Minnesota, Central Michigan, CentralNew York, and in the southern part of Vermontand New Hampshire. From the time of its earliestsettlement it has been noted for its health-givingelements. Even in early times it was free fromsectional epidemics. As a place of residence, the Fox River Valleypresents every attrition which is at all desirable.
