The Ojibwe People

The homeland of the Ojibwe people was the Lake Superior area, a harsh and unrelenting land, yet rich in fish, animals, herbs and berries. Artifacts found in Lake Superior Provincial Park indicate habitation since at least 500 BC. It is likely that this area has been used for much longer, as artifacts dating to 8800 BC. have been found in other locations around Lake Superior.

Ojibwe life followed the circle of the seasons. In spring families gathered at traditional maple forest sites to collect sap for maple syrup. They travelled to river mouths to harvest the spring fish run. In summer they gathered along the coast to visit, collect berries and herbs and to fish. Fall brought fish runs, migrating geese and hunting of game. In the winter groups broke into small family units and headed inland to hunting and ice fishing grounds, away from the inhospitable coast.
